PTA Council meets to create plan

The Bastrop ISD Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Council met Oct. 14 with district and campus administrators, along with several campus PTA presidents to establish the direction of the group.

In a previous meeting, the PTA Council for the 2009-10 school year was established, naming Allison Murray as President. Other council members include Gwen Moninger, Vice President; Lisa Peavy, Secretary; Desari Breare, Treasurer; and Angie Dailey, Parliamentarian. Currently, the Arts in Education Chair is vacant if anyone is interesting in volunteering, contact any of the board members for more information. The PTA is established to provide support to local, campus level PTA groups.

The PTA Council meeting began with the introduction of the PTA mission, purpose and Texas PTA values.

After the treasurer’s report, Roderick Emanuel, Interim Superintendent addressed the group with news from the District. Highlights from his report include:

  • The recent BEST College Night that took place on Oct. 7 that included over 1,500 participants
  • The naming of Teri Watson as the Bastrop Middle School Principal. She will join the District on November 2.
  • The search is still ongoing for the Cedar Creek High School Principal position.
  • The BISD Board is working in conjunction with a consulting firm in the Superintendent search. Interviews will begin sometime in November.
  • Discussed the recent strategic planning process that concluded with the District’s new vision, mission and goals
  • Made note of a community advisory group that is working to promote the importance of post-secondary education – it’s not a choice these days; it’s getting to be mandatory to receive some type of education or training after high school.

The meeting concluded with discussions about the proposed budget for the year and the PTA calendar.
