New immunization requirements for 2009-10 school year

Texas Department of State Health Services approved several revisions to the “Immunization Requirements for Children and Students in Texas Public and Private Schools”.  The changes to the requirements were made in order to update the Texas elementary and secondary school immunization requirements so they adhere more closely to the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP).

The change requires all students entering kindergarten to have two doses of varicella, two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and two doses of hepatitis A. All seventh grade students must receive two doses of varicella, one dose of meningococcal, and one booster of a tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine.

In order to meet the requirements for the upcoming school year, the Bastrop ISD school nurses recommend immunizing your child as soon as possible. You may contact your campus nurse to schedule a time to receive these vaccines. Please note that if your student/child has already received these vaccines from their primary care doctor or public health clinic, please provide written documentation to the campus nurse.

The Bastrop ISD school nurses will have two shot clinics in order to assist parents in meeting the new requirements. Please bring a photo id and your child’s immunization record. The shot clinics will be held on Aug. 6 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Bastrop High School and on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Bastrop Middle School.

These requirements allow for medical and religious beliefs exemption. If your child is exempt from immunizations, he/she may be removed from school during an outbreak.  We are required by law to exclude all students from classes that are not immunized by the required date.  This is a state mandate which we cannot make exceptions.
