TEA Standards

The State Board of Education has adopted a curriculum for all Texas schools – the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).  These learning standards identify what students should know and be able to do at every grade level in every foundation and enrichment course.

The Bastrop Independent School District has designed a district curriculum that includes all of the learning standards outlined in the TEKS.  If you would like to view individual standards for your child, you can link on to the TEA website highlighted below or talk to your child’s teacher(s).

STATE ASSESSMENT

As mandated by the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS™) was administered beginning in the 2002-2003 school year. The TAKS™ measures the statewide curriculum in reading at Grades 3-9; in writing at Grades 4 and 7; in English Language Arts at Grades 10 and 11; in mathematics at Grades 3-11; in science at Grades 5,10, and 11; and social studies at Grades 8, 10, and 11. The Spanish TAKS™ is administered at Grades 3 through 6. Satisfactory performance on the TAKS™ at Grade 11 is prerequisite to a high school diploma.

SDAA II, the new TAKS-aligned State Developed Alternative Assessment program, was first field tested in Spring 2004 and will be implemented in Spring 2005. SDAA II assesses special education students in Grades 3-10 who are receiving instruction in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) but for whom TAKS is an inappropriate measure of their academic progress. This test assesses the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Students will be assessed at their appropriate instructional levels (K-10), as determined by their admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committees.
