Scholarships

Scholarships are funds awarded to students for college expenses that do not have to be re-paid. Scholarships may be awarded based on special qualifications such as academic accomplishments, athletic talent, community service, or artistic talent.  Scholarships are also awarded to students that show interest in specific fields of study in college, individuals that belong to certain underrepresented groups, students that may live in specific areas of the country, or students that demonstrate financial hardship.  Other scholarships may be available for students based on merit.  Merit awards include receiving scholarships based on community service and participation in civil and service organizations within your community.


Be careful for scholarship scams!  According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), many questionable organizations make guarantees or unrealistic promises in exchange for advance fees, monthly payments, or personal information.  If an organization is requesting information such as checking account numbers or credit card numbers in order to provide scholarship assistance, it is probably a scam!  It is important to remember that there may be legitimate companies or services that require a sign up fee, no company can guarantee or promise a scholarship! The Scholarship Fraud Prevention Act of 2000 created a fraud-awareness partnership between the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  For information about scholarship scams or to report a scam, call the FTC toll free 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).

CRITERIA:  Each student admitted to the Honors Program will receive the Elliott T. Bowers

Scholarship. Eligible students will be considered for additional competitive academic scholarships.  To

apply for the SHSU Honors Program, students must meet at least one of the following criteria: SAT

Composite Score of 1200 (critical reading and math) or above ACT Composite Score of 27 or above;

Ranked in the top

10% of their high school graduation class.

WHAT:  Belinda & Anthony Mays High School Achievement Scholarship

CRITERIA:  Scholarships will be awarded based on the applicant's academic achievements, extra

curricular activities, leadership, and service.  The minimum G.P.A. requirement to apply is a 2.5 on a

4.0 scale.

WHAT:  Time Warner Cable Rising Hero Award

FOR:  High School Seniors

CRITERIA:  This award honors “unsung heroes” in our communities who exhibit extraordinary

community service.  A Rising Hero is someone who has pledged to support and drive the efforts within

their communities to help our future generation and our neighbors excel in today’s world.

AWARD:  This year Time Warner Cable will honor at least three Rising Heroes with a $2,500

scholarship. Two additional $2,500 scholarships will be given to Rising Heroes who not only give back to their communities but who are also seeking degrees in technology, science, engineering and math.

FOR:  African American High School Seniors

CRITERIA:  A United States Citizen; Current high school seniors attending school in the United States

school grade point average of 3.50 and a minimum SAT score of 1300 – combined math and verbal

score/ or ACT score of 28; Applicants must have applied and accepted to an HBCU by July 1, 2010;

WHAT:  Scholarships to Marist College (NY)

FOR:  High School Seniors

CRITERIA:  1. Strength of curriculum and academic performance throughout high school

2. Standardized test scores (SAT/ACT)

3. Supplemental essay describing why the student would be a good candidate for this program and

Marist College

4. Interview with the dean and/or faculty from the School of Computer Science and Mathematics

5. Meeting demonstrated financial need requirements (Federal PELL eligibility)

WHAT:  Top 10% Scholarship Program

FOR:  Graduating high school seniors in the top 10% of their graduating class.

AWARD:  $2000/ renewable annually.

CRITERIA:  The 80th Texas legislature created the Top 10 Percent Scholarship to encourage students who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class to attend a Texas public institution of higher education. Qualifying students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) by April 1, 2010.  Be a Texas resident; Demonstrate financial need (to be determined by the college or university financial aid office); Complete Recommended or Distinguished Achievement HS curriculum; Rank in the top 10 percent (as of his/her 7th semester or 6th if the college uses that semester for admissions); Graduate from an accredited high school in Texas; Plan to enroll fulltime in a Texas public 2-year or 4-year college.

WHAT:  University of Houston – Academic Excellence Scholarship

FOR:  Graduating high school seniors planning to attend the University of Houston (Main Campus).

AWARD:  Varies from $2500 to $6500 annually.

CRITERIA:  Entering college freshmen who rank in the top 20% of their high school graduating class and who score 1100 or above on the SAT, or 24 and above on the ACT.  No application for this scholarship is necessary.  All students are automatically reviewed for eligibility upon admission to the university.

THEME:  “African Americans In Texas:  Past and Present” - You may select a topic on any aspect of history that reflects the influence and contributions that African Americans have made to their local

community or particular region of the state.  It is important to remember that a successful essay will not

only include a description of the topic in a local or regional setting, but should also contain analysis and interpretation of the topic.

WHAT:  Texas A&M Foundation Excellence Award Scholarship

FOR:  Graduating High School Seniors

CRITERIA:  Students must attend Texas A&M in the fall of 2010

ABOUT:  This award was created to provide scholarships to traditionally underrepresented groups, minorities and students from economically disadvantaged areas and educationally disadvantaged backgrounds.

AWARD:  $2,000-$2,500/year for 4 years
