DEIC Membership

The DEIC is composed of members who represent campus-based professional staff, district-level professional staff, parents, businesses, and the community. The Superintendent shall be the Board’s designee and shall name the chairperson of the committee from its members.

Elected Professional Staff
· There is no limit to the number of district-level representatives who can serve on the committee as long as the 2/3 and 1/3 rules are met. 
· Two representatives from each campus will serve on the committee, with at least one of those representatives being a classroom teacher.
· District-level staff shall be defined as professionals who have responsibilities at more than one campus, including, but not limited to, central office staff. 
·  A position should also be designated for a teacher who has expertise in serving special needs populations.  Should no teachers who are elected to the committee meet this criterion, the chairperson will select a teacher from one of the campus committee members. 
·  An employee’s affiliation or lack of affiliation with any organization or association shall not be a factor in either the nomination or election of representatives on the committee. 
· Each professional representative shall be nominated and elected from the representative campus committee grouping. 
· Nominated employees shall give their consent to serve on the committee before they are eligible for election. 
· Nominations and elections shall occur during the fall of each school year.  Nominees shall be placed on a ballot and voted on by the designated professional staff.  The nominees with the highest votes shall be placed on the committee. 
· Elected members may serve consecutive terms – that is, they may be reelected each time their term expires. Terms shall be two years. 
· If a vacancy occurs among the representatives, nominations shall be solicited and an election held or selection made for the unexpired term in the same manner as for the annual election.

Selected Based on Local Policy
· There is no limit to the number of selected representatives serve on this committee.
· Parents (or a person who stands in parental relation to a student) shall have children currently enrolled within the District. 
· The Superintendent shall, through various channels, inform all parents of District students about the committee and shall solicit volunteers. 
· The Superintendent shall use several methods of communication to ensure that community residents are informed of the committee and are provided the opportunity to participate, andshall solicit volunteers. 
· All community member representatives shall reside in the District and must be at least 18 years of age. 
· Business representatives shall represent the community’s diversity and need not reside in nor operate businesses in the District.
· Administrators shall serve as ex officio (nonvoting) committee members.
· Vacancy – A vacancy during a term shall be filled for the remainder of the term by election or selection as appropriate for the category. 
· If a vacancy occurs among the representatives, nominations shall be solicited and an election held or selection made for the unexpired term in the same manner as for the annual election.
·  A vacancy shall be filled by selection as appropriate for the category in the same manner as initially selected. 

The existence of the District-level committee shall not affect the authority of the Board of its designee to appoint or establish other advisory groups or task forces to assist it in matters pertaining to District instruction.
